Law school was a lot like this too; totally divorced from the actual practice of law (which involves a remarkable amount of entrepreneurship, in many cases) without even the benefit of preparing you for the exam; you have to take a prep course at the end for that!
Our program actually ended with mock interviews and such, to increase our chances of getting hired, and the Kettering seminar was organized by our professors. But nothing they could do would really prepare us to be RTs, not when we were learning to do things by the book.
